Reasons for Loud Water Heater Noise

Water heaters are amazing commodities that keep us warm, safe, and sanitary in our homes. It is an excellent amenity, that is until it begins to show signs of heating repair. We discussed at length the common signs of heating repair on the blog already, and one of those signs is loud and odd sounds that come from the heater.  Below, we will go over the common sounds coming from your hot water heater to expect and what to about them.

Types of Hot Water Heater Noises

There are several different water heaters that include tankless, electric water heaters, storage water heaters, and heat pump water heaters. Though these heaters differ in several characteristics, but they need repair they will generally give off the same type of sounds.

With so many heating systems on the market, it can be difficult to figure out what fits your needs best. Check out our article on the most efficient heating systems for your home.

Humming

That hum you hear may not be all that big of a deal at first, but with time it will get annoying. If you hear this sound from your tankless or heat pump water heater, there may be a problem with the main water heater element. If the heater element is loose, it will cause a vibrating or humming noise. If you have the tools, you may be able to tighten the element yourself. But, sometimes it’s better to leave the repairs to the pros so don’t hesitate to reach out to a local plumber in Dallas.

Hammering

Another sound to be aware of hammering. Despite the fact that hammering sounds can be caused by a variety of plumbing issues, loosely anchored pipes are the primary cause of them when it comes to water heaters. This sound isn’t only an inconvenience but is also something that could lead to further damage with pipes down the road. We recommend getting in touch with a hot water heater repair tech to have the pipes secured in place.

Screaming or Screeching

Sometimes the valves on storage or electric water heaters open slightly, letting out some air. As the air comes in contact with the metal, it will make that awful screeching sound that can wake you up at night. This issue isn’t something to call a repair tech for as it is easy to locate the valve and secure it again. However, you may need the help of a plumber if this issue continues to reoccur.

Hissing

If you hear any hissing, you must be checked for potential leaks as soon as you can. Whether it is coming from the water heater or a pipe, you will need the issue investigated as it can cause great damage to the home by leading to deterioration of walls and floors. The most concerning issue with water leaks is the development of mold. As we are all aware, mold can cause health conditions like respiratory issues, migraines, and allergies. Do not delay in contacting a plumber about a hissing sound coming from your hot water heater.

Ticking

Now you will be very motivated to get a plumber over to fix any ticking sounds as they have the potential to drive a person mad. Ticking sounds normally are found in check valves that are in charge of sending the water into the right direction. This sound can also come from pipes as the water heats and cools. If you hear this sound, don’t wait and call a plumber to repair the issue.

Not all water heater issues can be a DIY fix, but there are some other common plumbing problems you can take a crack at before calling the plumber. Check them out on our blog.
