What is HVAC System

HVAC is a common term for many homeowners. The term HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Are you aware of the components that make up an HVAC system? This article is aimed at explaining about various components and their functionalities.

  • The Furnace: The furnace is a vital component that takes up a majority of the space in HVAC system. It is usually located in the basement. The furnace moves air from the heat exchanger into the air duct.
  • Heat Exchanger: It is not a part of furnace but it is located inside the furnace. Heat exchanger has its own set of capabilities. The prime function of the heat exchanger is to add heat to the air coming from the combustion chamber.
  • Evaporator coil: This HVAC part is also in the furnace but its job is entirely different. Refrigerant is a fluid that causes cooling flows through the evaporator coil. Whenever the hot air passes through it, the coil absorbs the heat from it. This mechanism is responsible for inflow of cold air through the air duct across your home.
  • Condensing Unit: Its function is similar to that of evaporator coil but the difference is that the condensing unit is just meant for an outdoor HVAC unit. It is a cube shaped unit that exchange the heat with the air that passes over it. However the condensing unit in return gives off heat.
  • Thermostat: This is the most common part of the HVAC system that you’re most familiar with. It is a small appliance placed on the wall of main level of your home. Depending on your choice of temperature, you can either turn on the air conditioning or heating system.
  • Refrigerant Tubes: These tubes are made up of metal and connect the evaporator coil with condensing coil. In short, it works as a connector for indoor and outdoor HVAC units. Cooling refrigerant is stored under these tubes under a wide range of temperatures.
  • Vents: Vents allows the passage of air through air ducts to room.
  • Ductwork: Air ducts allow movement of air throughout your home. Air enters into HVAC system through certain sections of the ductwork.
  • Heating pump: when it is warm outside, the heat pump takes heat from inside to outside. However during the cold season, it does opposite. All these components of the HVAC work in sync to function properly and efficiently.
