What is HVAC System

HVAC is a common term for many homeowners. The term HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Are you aware of the components that make up an HVAC system? This article is aimed at explaining about various components and their functionalities.

  • The Furnace: The furnace is a vital component that takes up a majority of the space in HVAC system. It is usually located in the basement. The furnace moves air from the heat exchanger into the air duct.
  • Heat Exchanger: It is not a part of furnace but it is located inside the furnace. Heat exchanger has its own set of capabilities. The prime function of the heat exchanger is to add heat to the air coming from the combustion chamber.
  • Evaporator coil: This HVAC part is also in the furnace but its job is entirely different. Refrigerant is a fluid that causes cooling flows through the evaporator coil. Whenever the hot air passes through it, the coil absorbs the heat from it. This mechanism is responsible for inflow of cold air through the air duct across your home.
  • Condensing Unit: Its function is similar to that of evaporator coil but the difference is that the condensing unit is just meant for an outdoor HVAC unit. It is a cube shaped unit that exchange the heat with the air that passes over it. However the condensing unit in return gives off heat.
  • Thermostat: This is the most common part of the HVAC system that you’re most familiar with. It is a small appliance placed on the wall of main level of your home. Depending on your choice of temperature, you can either turn on the air conditioning or heating system.
  • Refrigerant Tubes: These tubes are made up of metal and connect the evaporator coil with condensing coil. In short, it works as a connector for indoor and outdoor HVAC units. Cooling refrigerant is stored under these tubes under a wide range of temperatures.
  • Vents: Vents allows the passage of air through air ducts to room.
  • Ductwork: Air ducts allow movement of air throughout your home. Air enters into HVAC system through certain sections of the ductwork.
  • Heating pump: when it is warm outside, the heat pump takes heat from inside to outside. However during the cold season, it does opposite. All these components of the HVAC work in sync to function properly and efficiently.

What a Video Inspection of a Plumbing Line Should Include

A video inspection can be useful when you need help with getting a plumbing line in your home analyzed and cleaned out properly. A video inspection will work to review what is keeping a line from staying healthy but it must especially include several points to keep the inspection process working well.

A Proper Electronic Location

A video inspection should include a full electronic analysis of the specific spot where something troubling may be found in your plumbing system. The inspection can include a review of something like a clog or a dislodged section of a pipe. But whatever the problem might be, your video inspection should include a full analysis where the issue might be.

An electronic review could include information on how deep the issue is and how many feet or inches it is within a pipe. This may be used for sensors or a measurement of whatever is being inserted into the plumbing line. Whatever it may be, it is critical to see how deep the issue might be so it becomes easier for the problem to be fixed as soon as possible.

High Resolution Is Important

The type of clog or issue impacting your plumbing line must be fixed as soon as possible. The problem with so many clogs is that they all require different cleaning compounds. A high-resolution readout must be used in the video inspection to get a clear idea of what is inside a system. This ensures that it will be easy for a problem to be fixed up and treated right.

What About Items Moving Through?

Sometimes a plumbing video inspection can include a review of how items might move through your plumbing system. A video review can help you with identifying problems relating to the way how the plumbing system is treated.

The analysis that comes with a video inspection can help you to identify anything that moves through and if there is a certain space that might have to be treated in particular. Sometimes a clog or other issue might be on the bottom part of a pipe while in other cases it could be at the top. This helps with getting a clear idea of how a treatment should be utilized and what can be handled to keep additional problems from being a serious threat to your plumbing system.

Your video inspection for your plumbing line should be handled carefully and clearly to ensure that there any problems that may be found are resolved well. A great inspection process will ensure that any problems within your system are fixed properly and with care. Be sure to contact a plumber for helping with getting your system analyzed with a full video review so you can get a clear idea of what the issue in a system might be.

How to Fix Common Plumbing Problems

There are common plumbing problems that will spring up in your home anytime. Some of these problems are quite easy to fix if you have a few essential tools. It’s important to have these tools at home to help you fix minor plumbing emergencies. Many times, you’ll experience a clogged toilet, slow draining sink or low water pressure.

If you’re the handy type of person, you can tackle small repairs in your house such as unclogging your toilet or changing a worn-out washer. However, bigger and complicated plumbing repair work should be done by professional plumbers. Remember, even a thorough plumbing inspections cannot prevent occasional leak or clog, especially in older homes. Most of these common plumbing issues equally require common solutions.

Here are some of the common plumbing problem

1. Low water pressure

When you experience low water pressure, the problem could be the sink faucet. Start by checking whether this problem is affecting both the cold and hot water. If the low water pressure persists in both hot and cold water, then the main cause could be the aerator.

The culprit is the calcium deposits that slowly build up inside the faucet aerator. A blocked aerator is an easy thing to fix by cleaning out the debris that builds on it. In case you notice the low water pressure soon after cleaning the aerator and shower head, the problem might be more complex. Call a qualified plumber to fix this problem for you.

2. Slow or clogged drains

Whether its stopped-up toilet, sink or tub draining slowly, every homeowner will experience these plumbing problems. More often these plumbing issues are caused by a collection of debris over the time. The problem could be a partial or complete clog. Shine a flashlight inside the drain to check if you can spot any problem.

You can use a plunger to fix the problem. This is a very important tool to have in your home. A plunger is designed to use air pressure to dislodge any debris causing a clog. If you’re dealing this problem more frequently, then it’s time to seek help from a professional plumber.

3. Running Toilet

Are you tired of jiggling your toilet handle after flashing? Well, maybe it’s time to replace some of its inner workings. A toilet will run when a defective flapper valve allows the water to pass from its tank to the bowl.

Other causes might be an imbalanced float or loose fill tube. With a toilet repair kit, you’ll require a little effort to fix the problem. Occasionally, a toilet can run due to other complex reasons. In case you have replaced the float apparatus, flapper, and fill tube, and the problem persists then do not hesitate to call for help.

4. Slow draining tub

A tub drain can easily be clogged by human hair, which slows the water from moving down the tub drain. You can either use the needle nose pliers or Zip-it tool to reach in and clear out all the debris. If your tub has a tub stopper, then you should remove it to access the hair clog. It’s a good practice to remove any debris from your tub drain more regularly. Leaving it for long, this debris can clog your tub drain completely

Check the Weatherstripping to Decrease Heating Costs

When you have a proper weather-stripping set, you will keep cold air from getting into your home. This, in turn, makes it easier for your heating costs to stay down. A great stripping set ensures that your heat will stay indoors without escaping.

But to make it work well enough for you, it is important to watch for how the weatherstripping is organized. You must use a powerful set to see that you’re keeping the air inside your home under control.

What Is Weatherstripping Made With?

Weatherstripping materials are typically made with thick caulk materials. These include items that can block out cold temperatures in an area. This would work well within your home if you are cautious with making it functional.

Rubber compounds may also be added. It is sturdy and thick and can also reflect cold temperatures quite well.

Anything that is used can be rigid or soft. A softer option may be used around the inside part of your home. This could help you to secure any spots inside a room while being soft enough to handle the force that comes from a door closing. A harder application is best if you have space where you need an extra bit of protection, particularly when getting it added outside your home.

DIY Weather-stripping

Where Is It Added At?

Weatherstripping materials can be added around the windows and doors outside your home. This is to add a slight barrier that keeps air from moving through and being a nuisance.

It can also work on doors inside your home. This could help you out if you want to keep the air in your space from escaping or otherwise being too hard to handle at a given time.

As this is applied in the right spots, it should be easy for a space to feel comfortable. You should get the materials added around the surfaces around doors and windows to allow air within a room to stay intact and safe.

When Should It Be Replaced?

This part of your sealant should be replaced every couple of years. The wear on such items can keep a spot from feeling relaxed. You must watch out so you know it’s not hard to get it replaced.

You must use a strong adhesive on your sealant materials. Most weatherstripping applications come with their own bonding materials although you might have to provide one of your own items to see that it won’t be too hard to use.

Watch as you get a great weatherstripping application in your home to keep heating costs down. You will see when you use weather-stripping that it will not be a real struggle to use. You might be amazed at how well it can work for the demands you hold.

What is HVAC Replacement?

 HVAC Replacement

In the simplest words, HVAC replacement means parting ways with your old HVAC units and getting a new one in its stead. HVAC replacement does not necessarily have to be a complete replacement. HVAC system has two separate units – air conditioning and boiler and furnaces unit. Air conditioning keeps you cool in summers and boilers keep you warm in winters.

Do I Need Repair or Replacement?

commercial hvac servicesSometimes, major or minor components of the system may need to be replaced. But if you are just replacing certain components, it is basically a repair. The true replacement is when the entire HVAC unit is renewed (considering cooling and heating units as separate).

So, how do you know it is the time for the replacement? HVAC is a pretty sturdy and robust system. Therefore, identifying the right time for the replacement could get a little difficult.

Expected Life of an HVAC Unit

Some people do not know that the manufacturer of the HVAC system also specifies its expected service life. According to them, when that time has passed, the HVAC unit must be replaced. But sometimes your system seems to be fully functional and you see no reason to meddle with it.

This is where you will need to think a little differently. The expected service life is about ten years for the HVAC system. It means that it has already served you enough. While it may seem that it is doing a good job, in reality it might be costing you much more than you expected in terms of energy consumption.

Sometimes your HVAC system will give you clear or subtle indications that the time for the replacement has come.

What if I Have a Furnace?

If you are using a furnace that is gas-fired then its most important component is heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is designed to let the transfer of heat from the gas burner take place. This heat is then circulated through the entire HVAC system. If there is even small damage to the exchanger, you will want to get it replaced immediately.

Heat exchangers sustain damages in the form of holes and cracks. Over time, after prolonged use, the heat exchangers become more prone to damages. They have the endurance capacity and if they get heated beyond that they will get damaged. This is something that is quite common when the HVAC is old. However, if the filter is not cleaned properly, it will get damaged much earlier.

Rusting is a Problem

Rusting is another big culprit causing the damage to the heat exchangers. The rusting is caused when the humidity and moisture level in the area are high. Sometimes, when the furnace of the heating unit is too close to the AC it also causes the rusting of the exchanger.

As far as air conditioning unit is concerned, if you hear too much noise from the duct or the cooling is not effective, it could be the time to go for replacement.

Kitchens & Baths Essentials: Copper

In March we covered Spring Cleaning: The Bath and Spring Cleaning: The Kitchen. This month we are focusing in on some of the details of our favorite spaces:

Copper sink

Kitchens & Baths Essentials. Our Kitchen Essentials include Metals & other surfaces – Copper, Stainless Steel, Cast Iron, Sterling Silver, Non-Stick and Enamel surfaces. We’ll be exploring easy ways to keep them at their very best. Today we focus on one of our favorite metals:

Moscow Mule Copper MugCOPPER
Copper has quickly risen to fame in the Kitchens & Baths industry in recent years. Today we see this metal every where; from bowls and cups (Moscow Mule, anyone?) to décor and – our favorite – copper sinks. And while some aspire for that perfect patina, others seek the coveted crimson hue only copper can claim. Here are a few tips to keep your copper exactly how you like it.

Antique Patina Copper BowlsTHE PERFECT PATINA: This beautiful blue-green coloring is a naturally occurring result of the oxidation of copper. Let’s take, for example, The Statue of Liberty. Did you know Lady Liberty is made of Copper, and her signature sea-green color comes from patina?

You, too, can achieve that perfect patina (Okay, not You, but your copper items) with a few simple steps.

1. Clean the copper. Yes, this may sound counterintuitive, but fingerprints, oil and debris hinder the patina process. Cleaning the copper creates the right base to allow patination to occur.

2. Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any cleaning agents.

3. Scrub the item (going with the grain) with baking soda & rinse completely.

4. Fill a spray bottle with a vinegar and salt wash (1 part vinegar, 1 part salt). For a stronger solution you can use a combination of Ammonium Sulfate and Copper Sulfate. Click here for directions.

5. Place the copper item on a towel and spray liberally with either mixture. Allow to dry completely. Repeat this process at least 5 times.

6. Allow the mixture to stand for at least 8 hours. You patina will begin to appear before your eyes. Once the expected level of patination has occurred, rinse with water.

7. You have perfected patina! To keep this greenish-blue hue, avoid acidic and harsh cleaning agents; stick to water and allow the patina to take on a life of its own.

Crimson Shine Copper BowlTHE COVETED CRIMSON SHINE: Copper achieves a gorgeous golden-red hue unlike any other metal. And much like its metallic counterparts, it takes some dedication to keep it that way. Here are a few tips to keep your copper gleaming.

1. Frequently wash the item to remove dirt, dust and oils. As with sterling silver, it is always best to use gloves when cleaning and handling copper to keep from leaving fingerprints behind.

2. Use pH-neutral soaps when using a cleaning agent. Anything extremely acidic (lemons, limes, vinegars, etc.) will cause corrosion and fast-forward the patina process.

3. Copper has many phases of coloring and everyone has a different desired appearance. When your piece has achieved your desired color, rub with a wax such as: copper wax, beeswax or even old fashioned furniture wax.

4. If the patina is too dark, use a copper polishing cream with a slightly acidic base to reduce the coloring. And then wax (See #3) to keep the lightened copper intact.

5. If the patina is too light, clean once (See #1 and #2) and allow oxidation for some length of time, until the copper darkens to the color your desire. This can take days to weeks, sometimes even months to achieve the perfect color.

Copper is coveted for it’s beautiful range of colors and the slight nuances that exist within its variations; from the lightest golden-oranges, to crimson-reds, all the way to seafoam-green. The time and care you put into your pieces allow you to create the perfect patina, or lack thereof, that you want. Show your personality in your copper pieces.
